How true is the commitment of companies to climate change?

To assess the ability of companies to measure and reduce their carbon emissions, BCG Gamma collected and analyzed the responses of executives, from 1,290 organizations operating in nine of the main industries around the world, who have full or partial responsibility for making decisions to track and reduce their emissions. The findings show that many companies have a long way to go when it comes to measuring and reducing emissions. Although the results show that 85% of those surveyed are concerned about reducing their emissions, only 9% are able to measure their emissions exhaustively and the total of those surveyed estimate that there is a margin of error in the measurement ranges. 30% to 40%.

When companies can’t understand their baseline emissions levels, how do they expect to track their emissions and set the right targets? If companies don’t collect and analyze emission factors and data, they cannot expect their measurements to be accurate. In addition, companies that only calculate emissions from their own production processes can greatly underestimate total emissions, including those generated by the production and delivery of inputs and product packaging, as well as customer use.

If organizations are to halve their emissions by 2030, based on Paris Agreement commitments, and eventually achieve net zero by 2050, they must measure comprehensively, accurately, and frequently. Without understanding the full scope and composition of their internal and external emissions, they cannot know where to focus their reduction efforts.

New AI-enabled tools can help companies meet this challenge by taking their measurement, optimization and tracking capabilities to the next level. BCG GAMMA has developed CO2AI, a tool that companies can take advantage of to automatically ingest and report data, calculate a carbon footprint, run simulations, set targets, manage a global portfolio of abatement initiatives, and more. Our experience suggests that AI can directly enable companies to reduce emissions by up to 40% by identifying the best initiatives, tracking results, and optimizing operations.
