He Pope Francis expressed this Sunday his gratitude for the beginning of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, highlighting the importance of reaching “a fair solution for both states.” During the Angelus prayer, the Supreme Pontiff thanked the mediators who worked to finalize the agreement in the Middle East and called on the international community to collaborate with Israel and Palestine to achieve a permanent ceasefire.

“In the past few days, it was announced that the ceasefire in Gaza would come into effect today. I express my gratitude to all the mediators. It is a great job to mediate to achieve peace, thanks to them,” said Francisco from the window of the Apostolic Palace.

The pontiff appreciated the efforts of “all parties involved” in the agreement, after Hamas delivered to Israel the list of the three hostages who will be released this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (local time), equivalent to 11:00 a.m. in Argentina.

The Argentine pontiff stressed that both Israelis and Palestinians need “clear signs of hope” after a war that lasted more than 15 months, leaving some prisoners in captivity for 470 days.
