WHO names promising drugs for the treatment of coronavirus

Two new drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 are considered promising by WHO and are recommended for use. These are baricitinib and sotrovimab.

“Baricitinib helps patients with severe or critical coronavirus. It is part of a class of drugs called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors that suppress overstimulation of the immune system. WHO recommends prescribing it with corticosteroids, ”said Melita Vujnovich, representative of the World Health Organization in Russia, in an interview with Izvestia.

WHO has also proposed the use of a monoclonal antibody drug, sotrovimab, for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in patients at high risk of hospitalization. This includes the elderly, immunocompromised people, and patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

“The guideline panel also reviewed two other drugs for the treatment of severe and critical COVID-19: ruxolitinib and tofacitinib. Given their uncertain results, WHO has made a conditional recommendation against their use,” added Melita Vujnovic.

She emphasized that prevention is better than cure, and drugs will not be an alternative to vaccines. It is better not to get sick because of the risks of severe infection and possible long-term consequences.
