Podcast “important today”: What do you give up for a better world?

Bigger, faster, more profitable. The basic law of the economy is that it keeps growing. Doesn’t have to be, says economist Niko Paech. He advocates an economy without growth and sacrifice as the key to a contented life. Can that work?

How far would you go to save the planet? Give up flying? Eat less meat or no meat at all? Both imaginable. But what about clothes? Don’t buy anything new, just patch up the old. And technology: Can you imagine repairing an old smartphone instead of buying a new one?

Prof. Dr. Niko Paech says: “We have to emancipate ourselves from being dependent on industry.” Paech is an economist, is considered Germany’s best-known critic of growth and researches what he calls “post-growth economics” at the University of Siegen. And: According to his own statements, he flew only once decades ago, otherwise only travels by train, repairs his twelve-year-old notebook, a used stereo system bought 20 years ago, mends his clothes and does not own a smartphone – and is happy with it. In episode #215 of “today important” he advocates renunciation as a way to a more sustainable future and says: “A life without growth does not mean crying asceticism, but rebalancing the dose of the things we give ourselves .”

Saturday is Hanau Memorial Day

Tomorrow is memorial day for Sedat Gürbüz, Gökhan Gültekin, Said Nesar Hashemi, Mercedes Kierpacz, Hamza Kurtović, Vili-Viorel Păun, Fatih Saraçoğlu, Ferhat Unvar and Kaloyan Velkov. On February 19, 2020, they were murdered in Hanau by a right-wing extremist. Another day of remembrance for the victims of terrorist violence will be March 11 every year. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said at a current hour in the Bundestag that right-wing extremism is the greatest threat to the democratic and liberal basic order. One can only hope that the fight against it goes beyond setting memorial days.
