Russia-Ukraine conflict: UN Security Council deals again with Ukraine crisis

On Thursday night, the UN Security Council met again for a session on the conflict over Ukraine. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba had previously asked for it.

In view of the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UN Security Council should deal with the crisis again.

Diplomatic circles informed the German Press Agency that the meeting of the most powerful UN body should take place on Thursday night after a corresponding request from Kiev. The time given was 3:30 a.m. CET.

Resolution could be put to a vote

The Security Council met in New York on Tuesday night, following the recognition of the two Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states. At the upcoming meeting of the 15-member council, a resolution could also be voted on, according to diplomats.

In view of the Ukrainian separatists’ request for assistance from Russia, Kiev had previously appealed to the United Nations Security Council. The most powerful UN body has now been asked for an emergency meeting for a second time after Monday, wrote the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, on Twitter on Wednesday.

The heads of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk had previously written to Russia asking for assistance in fending off attacks by the Ukrainian army, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. This means that Russian and Ukrainian soldiers could soon face each other directly for the first time in the conflict that has been going on for eight years.
