US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has invited to a conference at the US air base – 20 countries have now agreed at short notice. What is the aim of the consultations?
According to US information, more than 20 countries have so far confirmed their participation in the Ukraine conference, which is planned for next Tuesday at the US Air Force base in Ramstein.
Around 40 countries have been invited, said US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby in the Pentagon. He did not mention which countries have already agreed. Non-NATO countries are also among them. The meeting does not take place under the umbrella of the alliance.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin invited to the conference at the base in Rhineland-Palatinate. One goal of the deliberations is the lasting security and sovereignty of Ukraine, Kirby had previously said. It should therefore be about the defense needs of Ukraine beyond the current Russian war of aggression.
The fact that more than 20 countries have already pledged at such short notice is a strong sign of the importance that the United States and these countries attach to Ukraine’s defense needs, Kirby stressed on Friday. Responses from invited countries are still pending. The US government announced $800 million in new military aid to Ukraine this week.
