State election: Survey sees the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia just ahead of the SPD

Only a little more than a week, then elections will take place in the most populous federal state. Recent surveys show: It will be tight.

According to a survey commissioned by ZDF for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 15, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst’s CDU is currently just ahead of the SPD with challenger Thomas Kutschaty.

The ZDF “Politbarometer Extra” determined a value of 30 percent for the so-called Sunday question for the Christian Democrats, 28 percent would give the SPD their vote. A strong increase was determined for the Greens, they would therefore come to 18 percent.

The FDP and AfD would each reach seven percent of the second votes in the projection. This would not be enough for the black-yellow coalition to continue in the most populous federal state with around 18 million inhabitants. This was announced by ZDF on Friday. However, a red-green or black-green coalition would be just about possible. With three percent, the left would again miss the entry into the NRW state parliament. According to the survey, the proportion of those who are not yet sure who or whether they want to vote is very high at 40 percent.

Infratest dimap determined very similar figures for ARD in a survey published on Thursday. Here, too, there was a neck-and-neck race between the CDU (30 percent) and SPD (28 percent). In the “Voter Check” commissioned by 39 NRW daily newspapers on Wednesday, the results were only slightly different: the CDU received 32 percent of the votes, the SPD came to 28 percent.

When it comes to the current question of who the voters want as prime minister, the head of government, who took over the office from Armin Laschet (CDU) last October, is ahead with 39 percent, according to ZDF. Challenger Kuchaty caught up compared to previous surveys and comes to 31 percent.

For comparison: In the 2017 state election, the CDU had achieved 33.0 percent. The SPD had come to 31.2 percent, the FDP to 12.6 percent. The AfD (7.4) and the Greens (6.4) also cleared the five percent hurdle five years ago and entered the NRW state parliament.
