A special statement on a “very special” day: Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will give a television speech on Sunday on the anniversary of the end of the world war.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will address the German population in a televised speech on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe. This was confirmed by deputy government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann on Friday in Berlin. First, the newspaper reported.
Apart from the annual New Year’s speech, it will be the second TV speech by Chancellor Scholz, who already spoke directly to the citizens in a television speech on February 24 – at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“A special May 8th this year”
According to the spokeswoman, the speech will be broadcast on television in the evening. The reason is the war in Ukraine. It was “a very special May 8th this year”. The fact that two countries that fell victim to German aggression in World War II are now at war with each other is “a very depressing circumstance”.
On May 8th, the end of the Second World War in Europe is commemorated by the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht. The day also marks the liberation of Europe from National Socialism. In the Pacific region the war continued. It only ended there with the surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945.
