“Whoever votes for Laschet …”: SPD election spot causes outrage

After the failures of the CDU and Greens candidates for chancellor, the SPD has now also made the headlines. In an election advert they criticize the ultra-conservative worldview of a Catholic employee of Armin Laschet. Now there is criticism.

The Social Democrats are sometimes heavily criticized for an election campaign commercial. The recently presented film reads “Whoever votes for Armin Laschet from the CDU … chooses arch-Catholic Laschet confidants for whom sex before marriage is taboo”. Specifically, it concerns statements by the head of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Chancellery, Nathanael Liminski. In the “” party researcher Uwe Jun described the video as a “drastic form of ‘negative campaigning'”. Others speak of breaking a taboo.

Liminski comes from a Catholic family and is considered the right hand man of Armin Laschet. His father is a member of the controversial Catholic community Opus Dei, Liminski himself is one of the founders of the Catholic network “Generation Benedikt”, loyal to the Pope, which is known for its ultra-conservative attitude.

SPD criticizes the CDU’s ultra-conservative stance

The SPD commercial shows Russian matryoshka dolls (box dolls) that are gradually being unpacked. The dolls emerging from it bear the faces of well-known CDU politicians, including party chairman Armin Laschet as well as Hans-Georg Maaßen and Friedrich Merz. It should be shown symbolically who is actually behind Armin Laschet. A Liminski doll is also displayed. A voice from the off said: “Whoever votes for Armin Laschet from the CDU … chooses arch-Catholic Laschet confidants, for whom sex before marriage is a taboo”.

The SPD divides stern– Request that one specifically refers to a statement by Liminski from the “”. He told the magazine in 2007: “I know a lot of homosexuals, and I feel sorry for some of them. The state must promote the natural form of marriage and family out of pure self-preservation.” The SPD wanted to stand up for “an open and tolerant society,” said the spokeswoman. “In the direct political environment of the CDU candidate for chancellor, arch-conservative positions are represented, including the statement that he is sorry for homosexuals.” Liminski’s attitude towards homosexuals is not mentioned in the commercial.

Criticism of breaking taboos

The party has been heavily criticized for its commercial. The chairman of the NRW regional group of the CDU in the Bundestag, Günter Krings, told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”: “In the post-war period, highly personal issues and religious convictions were never made the subject of political attacks.” He did not trust the SPD to violate the consensus among democrats in this way, but it shows that the SPD is running out of arguments.

The video is also being discussed on Twitter. For example, the Greens’ former spokesman for religious policy, Volker Beck, tweeted: “Liminski may represent strange positions and have connections. The fact that he is Catholic does not speak against him and not against Armin Laschet, however.”

There was also criticism from Christian circles. At the state parliament, the head of the Catholic Office in Düsseldorf, Antonius Hamers, said: “I find it very strange to spread anti-Catholic clichés in this way.” To discredit someone because of their beliefs is wrong.
