Traffic lights, tests or air filters: Corona rules in children’s gardens are still a matter for the different countries

The nationwide security concept for local schools has been known since last week. Since kindergartens are a matter for the federal states, the Ministry of Education is not formally responsible for them, but at least plans to make recommendations.

In addition, Education Minister Heinz Famann (VP) has announced that childcare facilities will also be taken into account in part of his planned early warning system: wastewater analyzes are to be carried out in 116 sewage plants so that increasing incidence of infections can be detected at an early stage. If there is an increased risk in a region, the ministry should warn not only the schools but also the kindergartens in order to be able to react regionally with stricter security measures.

While intensive tests are carried out in the schools in the first two weeks in order to exclude infected return travelers, there is no such mandatory safety phase in the children’s gardens. In several federal states, reference is only made to the general federal guidelines for return travelers. In Wien Returning travelers are called upon to test before they return to kindergarten; in Tyrol this call applies to all returning travelers from the age of six.

Compulsory vaccination planned for new employees

Even after that, Vienna wants to rely on testing in kindergarten. In the office of the responsible city councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) it is pointed out that the free PCR test offer “Alles Gurgelt” can also be used by most kindergarten children. The details of the corona protective measures in kindergarten and school are to be presented next week. In any case, the employee tests will continue to be carried out, according to the recommendation of the city, vaccinated people should voluntarily continue to test twice a week. For new hires in the city’s kindergartens, a corona vaccination should also apply from autumn.

In Lower Austria The details of the Corona security concept in kindergartens should be communicated in the next few days, according to the office of Landrtin Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister (VP). What is certain is that the antigen sweetening tests, which were rolled out to all facilities in mid-May, will also be used in the future;

Also in Burgenland Lollipop sucking tests are still being used, of which three a week have been made available to every kindergarten child since April. The tests are carried out voluntarily at home and the results are reported to the facility, according to the office of Bildungslandesrtin Daniela Winkler (SP). It is recommended that educators only enter the children’s gardens if they meet the 3-G rule. At present, “normal operation under increased hygiene regulations” prevail. If possible, activities should be relocated to the open air. It is also important that there is a hygiene and prevention concept for every facility, according to Winkler.

O wants to orientate himself on infection occurrences

In other federal states, however, there is no need for kindergarten children to be tested. According to the federal ordinance, there is currently no compulsory test for children under the age of twelve, according to Krnten. Regular tests for children under six are viewed critically and should only be carried out on an ad hoc basis Steiermark stressed. Instead, they rely on the 3-G rule for all people aged 12 and over. Anyone who has not been vaccinated, tested or recovered must wear a mask throughout the kindergarten.

In Upper Austria In the meantime, considerations and planning are still ongoing for tests and regulations depending on the occurrence of the infection, such as a “traffic light regulation”. One wants to orientate oneself on the planned recommendations of the education ministry. Also in Crowns and the Steiermark a “traffic light regulation” is being considered again in order to be able to deal with the regionally different infection processes.

In Salzburg Lander Andrea Klambauer (NEOS) relies on what she sees as the “educational traffic light”, which is based on the infection process in the districts. In addition, the use of air filters should provide additional safety, in Salzburg their acquisition is subsidized at 50 percent.

In Tirol one sees the responsibility in matters of air filters meanwhile with the municipalities as the maintainer of the kindergartens, it said from the office of Bildungslandesrtin Beate Palfrader (VP) opposite the APA. A uniform federal health strategy for kindergartens would be sensible and welcome, it said. There was initially no response from Vorarlberg.
