Austria’s Chancellor Kurz is coming under increasing pressure. The economic and corruption prosecutor’s office is now investigating a second case against the conservative head of government. This time it is about suspicion of breach of trust, corruption and bribery, as the authority announced on Wednesday. The authority is investigating the suspicion that between 2016 and 2018 funds from the Ministry of Finance were used to finance politically motivated and sometimes manipulated surveys. Kurz stated that he was convinced that these allegations would soon turn out to be false. He is calm about the investigation, “of course” he will remain chancellor, the ÖVP boss told the ORF in the evening. The 35-year-old is already being investigated for alleged false testimony in a parliamentary committee of inquiry. According to the public prosecutor’s office, nine other accused and three associations are being investigated in addition to the Chancellor. The ÖVP confirmed raids in the Chancellery, the party headquarters and the Ministry of Finance. According to the party, close employees and advisers of the Chancellor are affected.
