: Riots in Brazil: Was “Schamane” there again?

Two years ago, a “shaman” was present when the US Capitol was stormed. Was there a counterpart in Brazil, as the pictures suggest? A fact check.

Two years ago, a “shaman” with face paint and attached horns made headlines during the violent storming of the US Capitol. Now photos of a similarly conspicuously dressed man are said to have appeared during the attack on the Brazilian government district.

Claim: Pictures prove that a “shaman” took part in the storming of the government district in Brasília.

Rating: Wrong.

Facts: His headdress, tattooed torso and face painted in the colors of the US flag went around the world: The man, who described himself as a “shaman”, was there when a wild crowd of supporters of the then US President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021.

However, images currently circulating on social media claiming to show a Brazilian version of such a “shaman” are not from the current attack on the government district in Brasília. Radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro broke into several buildings there on Sunday.

A BBC journalist had already published the photos of the disguised man on September 7, 2021 – at a demonstration by Bolsonaro supporters in Sao Paulo. The Brazilian newspapers “Diário do Centro do Mundo” and “Brasil de Fato” also made headlines in September 2021 with the photos of the man, which have now been published again.
