Human rights: Humanitarian situation in Afghanistan could escalate further

When the Taliban came to power, the restrictions on women’s rights that had previously been achieved in the country began. The need is great – and higher education is only permitted for the male population.

The massive curtailment of women’s rights in Afghanistan by the Taliban – together with Western sanctions against the Islamist government – could further intensify the humanitarian crisis in the crisis-ridden state. The organization International Crisis Group warns of this in a report published today. The cessation of aid projects primarily increases the plight of the population, especially women and girls.

Since taking power in August 2021, the Taliban in Afghanistan have continued to restrict the rights of women and girls. They are no longer allowed to attend school from the seventh grade and university.

“Taliban regulations oppress half of the population and sabotage other Taliban efforts to rebuild the economy after the war,” the organization said. At the end of last year, the new rulers also banned Afghan women from working in aid organizations, with the exception of the areas of health, education and nutrition. In response, aid organizations discontinued most of the projects.
