Nigeria: What Bola Tinubu’s election victory also means for Europe

The largest democracy in Africa has voted. As the new president, Bola Tinubu, who is (maybe) 70, must heal a young and deeply divided society. If it fails, a political conflagration threatens far beyond Nigeria’s borders – all the way to Europe.

His motto was a promise. Not to the people, but to himself. “It’s my turn now,” was Bola Tinubu’s slogan. And he kept his promise: The kingmaker now takes the scepter himself. The 70-year-old will be the new head of government and thus also the new head of state in Nigeria, Africa’s largest democracy.
