They live in tents, containers and hotels – because their home was destroyed by the earthquake on February 6th. That could cause problems for millions of Turks at the ballot box. Erdogan wants to take countermeasures.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced new rules for the early presidential and parliamentary elections for voters displaced by the earthquake.
The 69-year-old head of state announced that he would issue a decree to officially set the date – which is planned for May 14th – that would be published in the state gazette the following day. The decree will ensure that people whose place of residence or voter registration changed because of the February 6 tremors can exercise their rights.
According to government information, 3.3 million people have been evacuated from the region so far, and 1.5 million people are living in tents – about as many as the population of Munich. 50,000 people are housed in containers, 140,000 in hotels.
