Iraq: Baerbock promises Yazidis reconstruction aid after genocide

Foreign Minister Baerbock visited central scenes of atrocities committed by IS in north-west Iraq near the Syrian border. She promised to help the local people.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has promised the Yazidis in Iraq support for reconstruction and the prosecution of the perpetrators after the genocide by the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS). “Kuju is one of those places where evil has shown its face in this world,” said the Green politician on Thursday while visiting central scenes of atrocities in the Sinjar region near the Syrian border. “We can never bring back these fathers and mothers, these children. But we can ensure that the perpetrators of these brutal crimes are held accountable.”

On August 15, 2014, after a 12-day siege of the school in the Yazidi village, IS fighters in Kudshu herded and murdered the men, boys and older women. Other women and girls were kidnapped and sold as sex slaves. Most of the families still live in refugee camps in the Kurdish autonomous region. Kudschu is the hometown of the Yazidi human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad.

Baerbock said that since the international community failed to prevent the genocide, it has a responsibility “to ensure that justice is done.” Support is needed to ensure that the genocide is not passed on from generation to generation. In addition, displaced persons must be enabled to have a normal everyday life again.

The United Nations and the Bundestag have condemned the crimes committed by IS against the Yazidis as genocide. Baerbock laid white roses at a cemetery in kuju. In 2014, IS killed more than 5,000 Yazidis in the region. Tens of thousands were killed, kidnapped and enslaved.
