Education: More first-year students from foreign students

According to the statistics, 2.9 million students are currently enrolled at a German university. Recently, a few more first-year students were added.

Thanks to foreign students, the number of first-year students is increasing again. According to the preliminary results of the Federal Statistical Office, 474,900 first-year students began studying at a German university for the first time last year. That was 0.5 percent more than in the 2021 academic year, but around 7 percent less than in 2019, the year before the corona pandemic.

“The slight increase in the number of first-year students was solely due to the foreign first-time matriculation students,” reported the Wiesbaden statisticians. Their number rose by 10 percent compared to the previous year to 128,500 and is therefore still above the pre-corona level. The academic year was counted, i.e. the summer semester 2022 and the winter semester 2022/2023.

When it comes to the statistics, it should be noted that the age group of first-year students is demographically shrinking. After years of growth, the number of students in the 2022/2023 winter semester fell slightly again for the first time (minus 0.7 percent). According to the statistics, 2.9 million students are currently enrolled at a German university.
