Conflicts: North Korea reports testing of strategic cruise missiles

Tensions have been rising on the Korean Peninsula for months. North Korea is constantly testing missiles, South Korea is holding joint maneuvers with the United States. Now North Korea wants to demonstrate strength again.

The self-declared nuclear power North Korea has said it has fired two military guided missiles from a submarine in the direction of the open sea. It was therefore a test that was intended to serve as a nuclear deterrent. The two strategic cruise missiles landed in the target area in the Sea of Japan (Korean: East Sea) 1,500 kilometers away, the state media reported on Monday. The test took place early Sunday morning.

The South Korean military confirmed the weapon test of the largely isolated neighboring country. However, it initially spoke of a still unknown submarine missile that had been shot down from the east coast of North Korea.

South Korea wants to start new military exercises together with the USA on Monday. North Korea accuses both countries of preparing an attack with their joint maneuvers. Washington and Seoul dispute this.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated significantly since last year. Despite being banned by UN decisions, North Korea increased the scope and speed of its tests with ballistic missiles, which, depending on the design, can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. It also repeatedly undertakes tests with cruise missiles. The US and South Korea resumed full-scale joint military exercises.
