Nicola Sturgeon has ruled Scotland for more than eight years. She has made an international name for herself as an advocate of independence. Now it should be known who will take over.
In Scotland, the intra-party vote on the successor to longtime Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has ended. This should promptly determine who will rule the northernmost part of Britain in the future. The personnel is considered groundbreaking in the struggle for Scotland’s quest for independence.
Until 12.00 Scottish time (13.00 CEST) on Monday, members of the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP) had the opportunity to choose between Health Minister Humza Yousaf (37), Finance Minister Kate Forbes (32) and former Minister Ash Regan (49).
All three want to advance the SNP’s stated aim of leading Scotland out of the United Kingdom and back into the European Union as an independent state. The result of the vote, which is also considered a directional dispute in the party, is to be announced in Edinburgh from 3 p.m. CEST.
Those are the two favourites
The two favorites, Forbes and Yousaf, represent different camps in the party. While Yousaf tends to follow Sturgeon’s line with a progressive agenda, Forbes has much more conservative views. She is, among other things, a staunch member of the Calvinist Scottish Free Church (Free Church of Scotland). If she wins the race, the Greens may want to end their cooperation with the SNP in government. The Greens announced that they did not want to continue the cooperation at any price.
In mid-February, Sturgeon surprisingly announced her resignation as First Minister and party leader of the SNP. The 52-year-old was the first woman to hold the highest government office in the northernmost part of Britain and is considered a driving force behind independence from the United Kingdom.
