Video switch: Mexico’s President and Biden want to discuss migration

In a few days, a controversial deportation policy from the tenure of ex-President Trump will expire. US President Biden and Mexico’s head of state López Obrador discuss migration in a video link.

Shortly before the expiry of a strict deportation regulation in the USA, President Joe Biden and the Mexican head of state Andrés Manuel López Obrador want to talk about the topic of migration. A video broadcast this Tuesday should also be about the fight against the drug fentanyl and economic cooperation between the two neighboring countries, López Obrador announced at his daily press conference on Monday.

On May 11, a controversial deportation practice, the so-called Title 42 regulation, will be dropped. It was introduced during the tenure of ex-President Donald Trump and, with reference to the corona pandemic, made it easier for migrants to be rejected quickly. Under Biden, the rule was initially retained. There is concern in the US that the number of migrants at the southern border could increase significantly after the rule is lifted.

In the future, the US government wants asylum seekers to register in centers in Guatemala and Colombia. There it is to be checked whether they even have a chance of entering the country before they make the dangerous journey through Central America and Mexico.
