Bundestag: Members’ allowances increase by 2.6 percent

268.41 euros: This is the amount by which the wages for politicians elected to the Bundestag will increase. That’s a slower rate of change than last summer’s hike.

The allowances of the members of the German Bundestag will increase by 2.6 percent to EUR 10,591.70 per month – according to initial calculations, the increase should be 3.5 percent. According to the Bundestag, this was adjusted again because of “a unique methodological feature”. The news portal “The Pioneer” reported first.

Members’ allowances are automatically linked to general wage developments. The sum that the parliamentarians receive monthly is thus adjusted every year on July 1 – analogous to the wage increase calculated by the Federal Statistical Office. According to the law, the Federal Office must notify the Bundestag of this by the end of March. This year it was initially 3.5 percent and then changed to 2.6 percent.

“This rate of change, which I was also informed of in writing, was significantly lower at plus 2.6 percent,” quoted “The Pioneer” as saying that Parliament President Bärbel Bas. She now wants to follow the changed number. This is the value that applied at the time of the increase. “Even in public, the second value would be perceived as ‘right’ and the first value as ‘wrong’,” said Bas.

The parliamentarians currently receive a parliamentary allowance of 10,323.29 euros. It was last raised in the summer of 2022 – at that time by 3.1 percent.
