Middle East conflict: Further fighting between Israel and militant Palestinians

As ceasefire efforts continue, Israel’s army and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip continue to attack each other. During the night, another jihad member is killed in a targeted manner.

Fighting between Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip and Israel’s army continues despite efforts to negotiate a ceasefire. On Thursday night, the Israeli armed forces reported the targeted killing of another high-ranking member of the militant Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip. He is said to have been the mastermind behind the group’s missile program. The jihad confirmed the death.

According to Palestinian sources, around two dozen people have died in the Gaza Strip since the fighting began, including several women and children. In the morning, warning sirens wailed again on the Israeli side in the border area.

Several Egyptian media reported the previous evening that Egypt had successfully mediated a ceasefire between Israel and the parties in the Gaza Strip. However, there was no official confirmation of this from any of the parties involved. In addition to Egypt, Qatar and the UN are also reportedly seeking a ceasefire. The head of the political branch of jihad in the Gaza Strip said the reason the talks broke down was Israel’s refusal to end the practice of targeted killings. Efforts continued, however.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in the evening that Israel is still in the middle of the anti-jihad operation. He stressed that he had “dealed the heaviest blow in its history” to the Palestinian organization.

According to military sources, Israel’s air force had attacked more than 150 targets in the Gaza Strip in the past few days, including weapons production sites and a jihad headquarters from which the group is said to have planned rocket launches in Israel. According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, 25 people have been killed and 70 injured since Tuesday. According to Palestinian sources, at least 17 of the dead were civilians.

More than 500 rockets fired at Israel

In response, Palestinian militants fired more than 500 rockets at Israel, according to the Israeli army. Around 360 of them crossed the border. Sirens were also heard several times in the Tel Aviv area on Wednesday. It was the first missile alert of this kind there since August last year. Some houses in the south of the country were reportedly destroyed. Several people were also injured on the way to shelters. According to the army, four civilian victims are said to have been killed by misguided jihad missiles in the Gaza Strip. This could not initially be verified independently.

The renewed escalation of the conflict followed the targeted killing by Israel of three senior members of Islamic Jihad.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing of civilians. He called on Israel to live up to its obligations under international humanitarian law. This included, among other things, renouncing the excessive use of force and protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure in armed struggles. Shooting rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip also violates international humanitarian law and endangers the lives of bystanders on both sides, Guterres warned.
