Action for grazing: A herd of cows on the Reichstag meadow

“In Germany, the cow on the pasture is becoming an endangered species,” says a Greenpeace agricultural expert. With an unusual action was now protested in front of the Reichstag.

Cows grazing on the meadow in front of the Reichstag – this is how the working group for rural agriculture (AbL) and Greenpeace protested for grazing dairy cows and fair milk prices.

The environmental organization Greenpeace called for a nationwide support program from Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) on Tuesday. The grazing of dairy cows only has a future if there are economic prospects for rural agriculture.

In 2010, according to Greenpeace, 42 percent of the cattle still had access to pasture, ten years later it was only 31 percent, according to Greenpeace. “The cow in the pasture is degenerating into an endangered species in Germany,” said Lasse van Aken, Greenpeace’s agricultural expert.

However, grazing is particularly species-appropriate and has a positive effect on the health of the animals. In addition, grazed grassland stores significantly more carbon in the soil than arable plants and helps to preserve biodiversity. As the police initially announced, there were no special incidents during the protest.
