Nature conservation: Brazil’s environmental agency bans oil drilling near the Amazon

Off the coast of Amapá in the Amazon region, oil giant Petrobras hopes to produce several billion barrels of oil. But the environmental agency intervened: there were “disturbing inconsistencies.”

The semi-state-owned Brazilian oil company Petrobras is denied a license for a controversial drilling near the mouth of the Amazon River in the Atlantic. The environmental agency Ibama justified its decision on Wednesday (local time) with “a number of technical discrepancies” and recommendations from its analysts.

There are “disturbing inconsistencies” regarding safe operation “in a new exploration area with high socio-ecological vulnerability”. According to the Brazilian news portal “G1”, the Petrobras plans provided no guarantees for the protection of wildlife in the event of possible oil spills. In addition, it was not clear how the drilling activities would affect the habitat of indigenous people.

According to “G1”, the oil giant Petrobras was only waiting for the approval of the environmental authority to start test drilling about 175 kilometers off the coast of the state of Amapá in the Amazon region. The Brazilian coastal region from Amapá to the state of Rio Grande do Norte has the potential to produce several billion barrels of oil.
