CDU minister makes commitment to own meat consumption

A visit by NRW Agriculture Minister Silke Gorißen (CDU) to the canteen at the University of Bonn caused criticism in her own ranks: a veggie month is currently running there. Internally, the minister commented on her own meat consumption.

The University of Bonn is running a veggie month: the five canteens are temporarily only serving vegan and vegetarian dishes. Silke Gorißen (CDU), Minister of Agriculture in North Rhine-Westphalia, also visited a canteen at her former alma mater, found out about the campaign and tried the meatless cannelloni herself.

“Those who eat healthily and sustainably also help with climate protection. Everyone should decide for themselves to what extent they eat exclusively meat-free food,” explained the CDU politician. But some in their party apparently did not like their participation in the campaign at all. As reported by “Welt”, Gorißen was then subjected to harsh criticism from within his own ranks. In internal chat groups, party colleagues are said to have taunted them, and there were also dissatisfied voices from agriculture.

CDU Minister of Agriculture: “For me, meat is part of the diet”

Apparently, many were bothered that the minister, as a CDU politician, supported a campaign that called for less meat consumption. In addition, Gorißen himself had expressed the hope at the meeting in Bonn that “more young people would be enthusiastic about healthy and sustainable nutrition” in the future.

According to “Welt”, Gorißen saw herself under so much pressure that she defended herself against the allegations with a statement. Everyone can decide for themselves whether they want to eat meat. In addition, the politician felt compelled to admit to her meat consumption. As quoted by “Welt”, Gorißen made it clear “that I myself am one of those people who regularly eat meat. For me, meat is part of the diet.”

In Germany, almost eight million people classified themselves as vegetarians last year, and around 1.5 million people as vegans. Common reasons for this decision are animal welfare, health aspects and the environmental and climate impact of industrial animal husbandry.
