Italy: Ex-Prime Minister Berlusconi discharged from hospital

After several weeks, Silvio Berlusconi is back home. Italy’s former prime minister was in intensive care for almost two weeks.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been discharged from hospital after 45 days of treatment.

The 86-year-old was driven from the premises of the San Raffaele Clinic in Milan in a car with an escort. He waved to the waiting journalists. Berlusconi was hospitalized in early April with pneumonia. The doctors then announced that the ex-head of government was also being treated for chronic leukemia, which he had been suffering from for a long time. He was in intensive care for almost two weeks.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose right-wing government includes Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, tweeted: “Forza Silvio” (“Forward Silvio”). She expects her coalition partner back “to fight many more battles together”.

Media mogul Berlusconi shaped Italy’s political life for decades. The right-wing populist was Prime Minister four times from 1994 to 2011 with interruptions. Today he sits in the Senate, the smaller of the two chambers of Parliament in Rome.

Berlusconi has been ill for years. At the end of 2020 he fell ill with Corona and pneumonia. In the years before he had to be hospitalized for a urinary tract infection. In 2016 he underwent heart surgery.
