Police criticism: expelled lecturer thanks for support

After a tweet, she lost her part-time job as a lecturer: Bahar Aslan will no longer teach “intercultural skills” at the Gelsenkirchen Police University. She’s also self-critical now.

University lecturer Bahar Aslan thanked her for her support and encouragement after she was expelled from the police academy in Gelsenkirchen. She is particularly happy about various job offers from universities and technical colleges, she tweeted. Aslan’s teaching assignment was not renewed because of a tweet.

The criticism of her expulsion ranges from “Dark Day for Freedom of Speech” and “Clear Case of Cancel Culture”. But Aslan also admitted for the first time: “You can criticize the way of speaking, maybe it was an unfortunate choice of words.”

“I’m sorry if police officers who do an exemplary job feel addressed. I was concerned with those officers who take part in right-wing extremist chats, who poison entire departments with their racist attitude. You have confidence in this institution deeply shaken, especially in the migrant community,” she said in “Zeit online”.

“Without Talking to Me”

Nevertheless, she is of the opinion: “The fact that they throw me out is a questionable signal socially. I’m surprised that they did it without talking to me.” Aslan had a teaching position for “intercultural skills” at the police academy.

Aslan’s tweet reads: “My heart starts racing when I or my friends get caught in a police checkpoint because all the brown filth inside the security agencies scares us. It’s not just my reality, it’s the reality of a lot of people in this one Country.”

The university then announced on Monday: “From the point of view of the university management, the lecturer is unsuitable due to her current statements to provide both the prospective police officers and the future administrative officials with an unprejudiced or well-founded view of democracy, tolerance and neutrality to mediate.”

Employment and criminal law examination is pending

The GdP state chairman Michael Mertens had previously said on Monday that such a “blanket condemnation of the security authorities is not possible”. The case must be processed and examined under labor and criminal law. The North Rhine-Westphalian CDU domestic politician Christos Katzidis said the statement was “intolerable and intolerable”. He expects a criminal and a disciplinary review.

Aslan spoke of a slander campaign in which, to her astonishment, GdP country manager Mertens took part: Her tweet was not a blanket condemnation of all police officers, as he claims. “Thought it was consensus that we would show clear edge against the right. I was obviously wrong,” she tweeted. She was “very surprised” at the union’s actions. You now get hate messages every minute.
