Runoff election for the presidency: far-right party stands behind Erdogan’s challenger

Next Sunday it will be decided who will be allowed to govern Turkey as president in the future. Erdogan challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu gets support from the Zafer party on the home straight.

Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu is going into the runoff with the support of the far-right Zafer Partisi.

In a joint statement, it was said that an agreement had been reached on the return of “all refugees and illegal immigrants” within a year. The party will support Kilicdaroglu in the second ballot, said party leader Ümit Özdag at a press conference.

Özdag’s party ran in the first round with the non-party ultra-nationalist Sinan Ogan as a candidate for a merger of several parties. He had declared his support for incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday. The alliance behind him dissolved. The Zafer party was the party with the most votes in the merger. According to preliminary figures, she received 2.2 percent of the votes in the parliamentary elections on May 14.

On May 28, Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu will face off in a runoff election for the presidency. Against the background of an increasingly hostile mood against refugees, the issue of migration played a major role in the election campaign. According to official figures, around 3.4 million Syrian refugees live in Turkey. Kilicdaroglu had previously advertised that she would be sent back to Syria on a voluntary basis within two years.
