War in Ukraine: Bundeswehr receives 18 new Leopard 2 tanks

At the end of March, Germany delivered 18 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Now the Bundeswehr is getting a replacement – with more modern equipment.

As compensation for tank deliveries to Ukraine, the Bundeswehr will receive 18 new Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks. According to participants, the budget committee of the Bundestag released around 525 million euros on Wednesday. At the end of March, Ukraine received 18 examples of modern Leopard 2A6 tanks from Germany.

The FDP budget politician Karsten Klein spoke of an “important building block for the defense capabilities of the armed forces”. Not only is the material given to Ukraine replaced, but the main battle tank is being equipped with new defense systems.

The Leopard 2 is considered the main weapon of the German armored forces. It has been in series production since 1978 and is constantly being modernized. The previous model, the Leopard 1 – the first main battle tank built for the Bundeswehr after the Second World War – had been phased out by the Bundeswehr 20 years ago.
