A year after the killing spree at a Texas elementary school that killed 21, US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill commemorated the victims. Too many schools, too many places of everyday life across America have become battlefields, he said in a speech at the White House.
“And in every place we hear the same message: do something. For God’s sake, just do something!” It’s time to act and speak out – “not as Democrats or Republicans, but as friends, neighbors, parents – and as fellow Americans,” said the US President.

On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old gunman shot dead 19 children and 2 teachers at an elementary school in the small Texas town of Uvalde. The attacker shot the children and teachers in two connected classrooms with an assault rifle.
Shortly after the crime, it became known that police officers had been in the hallway in front of the classroom at an early stage, but had not made any attempts to go into the room for a long time – although children from inside had called the police several times in desperation. More than 75 minutes after the shooter opened fire, emergency services entered the room and killed the perpetrator.
Stricter gun laws
Once again, the US President called for gun laws to be tightened, for example by banning assault rifles and quick-fire magazines. In order to push through something like this, Biden and his Democrats depend on the willingness of the Republicans in Congress to cooperate.
But efforts to tighten gun laws have been in vain for many years, largely because Republicans have opposed them. In addition, the gun lobby, led by the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), vehemently opposes any attempt to regulate gun ownership more closely.
