Ukraine News: Chancellor Scholz: “We are ready to defend every square centimeter of NATO territory”

Germany wants to use the Patriot air defense system to help protect the NATO summit in Vilnius in July. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) announced this in Berlin. “I am pleased that we can make an important contribution to the alliance in Vilnius,” said Pistorius. The unit is to be relocated from Slovakia to Lithuania.

“In close consultation with our partner Lithuania, NATO and our other alliance partners, we will bring in land, air and sea-based security capabilities.” For this purpose, units would also be used that “are either currently deployed on the eastern flank of the alliance or can operate out of Germany”. The ministry also announced that the Bundeswehr’s Patriot mission in Slovakia was to be ended. This had been evident for a long time. The unit was stationed there against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine to strengthen Slovakia’s air defenses.
