Morocco’s government claims the Western Sahara for itself, the independence movement there is supported by Algeria. This creates tension between neighboring countries.
The dispute between Algeria and Morocco is worsening: According to reports from Algeria, three Algerian citizens were killed in an alleged bomb attack by Moroccan troops in Western Sahara.
The victims were en route between Algeria and Mauritania to transport goods, as the Algerian presidency announced on Wednesday. The attack in neighboring Western Sahara is said to have occurred on Monday. Morocco initially did not comment on the allegations.
Algeria, on the other hand, spoke of “state terrorism” and a “new manifestation of brutal aggression” in Morocco in the Western Sahara. Algeria supports the Polisario independence movement there, Morocco, on the other hand, lays claim to the sparsely populated region and only wants to grant it autonomy. Morocco controls large parts of the territory, but this is not recognized internationally. At the end of August, Algeria officially broke ties with its neighbor in the conflict.
There are also tensions with European countries that reject Morocco’s claims to Western Sahara. After the Polisario boss was treated in a hospital in Spain, Morocco relaxed the border controls to the Spanish North Africa exclave Ceuta. Thousands of migrants came in. In May, the kingdom also called back its ambassador from Berlin because of the Western Sahara conflict. From Germany’s point of view, the status of Western Sahara is unclear and can only be defined within the framework of negotiations under the leadership of the United Nations.
