The German Greens’ strike vote overshadowed by internal squabbles

The German Greens started their ballot on Friday, overshadowed by violent staff disputes. The 125,000 party members can vote on the coalition agreement with the SPD and FDP and on the green list of ministers by December 6th at 1 p.m. Votes are cast digitally; alternatively, a vote by post is also possible.

The result is to be announced on St. Nicholas Day. It remains to be seen whether the Greens will be in a celebratory mood again by then. The occupation of her five ministerial posts triggered a violent wing dispute, the consequences of which are not yet foreseeable.

The reason for the dispute was the occupation of the Ministry of Agriculture: Former party chairman Cem Özdemir is to take over the office, leaving no room at the cabinet table for left co-parliamentary group leader Anton Hofreiter. The party left embittered that, Hofreiter was for them as set.

According to the left reading, the party executive conjured up Özdemir as a nasty surprise out of the hat. There is talk of breaking a word, of destroyed trust.

Minister with Turkish roots

Özdemir is eloquent, witty, achieved a brilliant election result and masters the light-footed game with the public. The first federal minister with Turkish roots should prove to be an advantage for the external impact of the Greens.

The fact that Hofreiter and Özdemir cannot simply become both ministers is due to the rules for filling such offices. There are similar sensitivities in other parties as well, with the Greens they are more far-reaching. They stipulate that at least half of the posts go to women, and both wings, left and real, want their interests to be represented in a balanced way.

The two party leaders Baerbock and Habeck are real and were appointed ministers from the start. This made it clear that Özdemir and Hofreiter could not both get a chance – keyword male majority. Steffi Lemke was nominated for the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. The 53-year-old agricultural engineer was federal manager for eleven years. Anne Spiegel is to become Minister for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. The 40-year-old is Vice-Prime Minister in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Roth becomes Minister of State

The sixth post for the Greens, which should now go to the left Claudia Roth as Minister of State for Culture and Media, was not included in these internal quarrels.

Nina Hagen for Merkel

The Bundeswehr will say goodbye to Chancellor Angela Merkel next Tuesday with the big tattoo. According to the Defense Ministry, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is expected as the guest of honor.

According to “Spiegel”, Merkel has chosen the title “For me, it should rain red roses” from Hildegard Knef as a musical interlude for the ceremony. In addition to the hymn “Great God, we praise you”, the staff music corps of the German Armed Forces also rehearsed the song “You forgot the color film”, with which the singer Nina Hagen had a hit in the GDR in 1974. Merkel grew up in the GDR.

The great tattoo is considered to be the highest honor that the German armed forces can bestow on a civilian. In addition to chancellors, federal presidents and defense ministers are honored with this custom when they pass.

Its origins go back to the 16th century. The ceremony always takes place in the evening and consists of a parade, several pieces of music – including the national anthem – and the march out. Torches are also part of it.
