Kamala Harris learned of Biden’s withdrawal over pancakes with bacon

A phone call from the US President cut Kamala Harris’ family breakfast short. In a major television interview, the Democrat reports on crucial minutes.

Please forgive the stereotype, dear readers, but it doesn’t get more American than this. In her first television interview as the newly elected presidential candidate, Kamala Harris talks about the moment when US President Joe Biden told her he was withdrawing from the election campaign. The ingredients of a potential American fairytale: bacon and pancakes.

On the Sunday in question, Harris had breakfast with her family. She was talking to her little nieces: “Auntie, can I have more bacon?” “Yes,” said Harris, “I’ll make you more bacon.” Then the phone rang, she told CNN, “and it was Joe Biden.”

Kamala Harris first thought of Joe Biden

The Democrat announced to her on the phone a decision that would turn the battle for the presidency on its head just a few months before election day on November 5 – and could turn Harris’ life 180 degrees. On the phone, Biden said he wanted to drop out of the race. “Are you sure?” she asked him, and he said yes. “And he was very clear that he would support me.”

CNN political journalist Dana Bash, who is interviewing Harris together with her vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, repeatedly asks questions. How did that go? Did the current vice president ask for Biden’s support, or did he offer it himself? And Harris – evades the question, as she does again and again in the nearly 40-minute interview. “My first thought wasn’t about me. My first thought was about him.”

Then the Vice President defends her President, as she did so often in the weeks before his resignation. “Joe Biden has not only led an administration that has achieved extraordinary success,” says Harris. “He is also a man who has been very selfless in his life and career, including as President, and has put the American people first.” That was completely different under other Presidents.

Unfortunately, Harris did not say in the interview whether she continued to fry bacon afterward. But the conversation on CNN could be a milestone in her own American dream. At the beginning of July, 81-year-old Biden withdrew his candidacy after much criticism about his age and the associated signs of aging. (read this chronicle of late insight here). It made waves, especially in June. Harris, meanwhile, has the next milestone ahead of her: her own televised debate on September 10 against former President Trump.
