The announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah is causing joy in Brussels. At the same time there are also reminders.

Top EU officials have expressed relief at the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. In the evening, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke of “very encouraging news” for the Lebanese and Israeli populations affected by the fighting. “Lebanon will have the chance to increase its internal security and stability thanks to Hezbollah’s reduced influence,” she added.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called the ceasefire agreement a relief given the devastating situation in the Middle East and praised France and the USA for their mediation. “It is now crucial that the ceasefire is respected to ensure the safety of Israeli and Lebanese citizens and the return of internally displaced people,” he said.

At the same time, the Spaniard warned the political elite in Lebanon to live up to their responsibilities and elect a president. Addressing third countries, he added: “The Lebanese have the right to regain their full sovereignty over the country’s affairs – without interference from outside.”
