As a long-term consequence of an accident in October, the Brazilian head of state ended up in intensive care. Now he is being released – but must initially remain in São Paulo.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been discharged from hospital after an operation for a cerebral hemorrhage. “He is stable, walks, eats and speaks normally. He had a very good postoperative period, which was within expectations,” said doctor Roberto Kalil on Sunday at a press conference in São Paulo, almost a week after the operation there Hospital Sírio-Lebanês.
The 79-year-old is now expected to stay in São Paulo until at least Thursday to be monitored. He will therefore only be allowed to engage in limited physical activity for the next 15 days, but will be able to work normally from home.
Lula was examined for headaches in the capital Brasília on Monday evening. A magnetic resonance imaging showed the cerebral hemorrhage, a result of an accident on October 19th. The president was then transferred to another unit at the same hospital in São Paulo, where he underwent a craniotomy (opening of the skull) to drain the hematoma.
The president, who appeared before the press wearing a hat when he was fired, said he felt fine. “I’m alive, unharmed and ready to work (…) I have a lot of work ahead of me.”
Lula suffered a cut on his head in October and therefore canceled his participation in the Brics summit in Kazan, Russia.
