The Liberals are setting the political course before the new election. The chairman signals self-confidence despite weak poll numbers. The race is not over yet.
FDP chairman Christian Lindner has called on his party to be optimistic and determined before the new Bundestag elections on February 23rd. “We have been tried and tested over decades in the ups and downs of politics, and we have often started the beginning of the year on the defensive,” said Lindner at the traditional Epiphany meeting in the Stuttgart Opera.
He called on the party to draw confidence from itself “in the knowledge that everything can be changed.” Lindner emphasized the need for a fundamental change in Germany’s economic policy course and also “the internal attitude” in a country that has obviously taken a wrong turn.
Lindner, who has declared cooperation with the Union as his goal, also addressed the ongoing criticism of himself and said: “Dear members present, let me introduce myself. My name is Christian Lindner. I am still 45 years old and obviously the worst Nightmare of the left-green mainstream in Germany.”
The FDP currently has to fear for entry into the Bundestag. After the break of the traffic light coalition, the party only got 3 to 4 percent in surveys.
