It was a private celebration with politicians and journalists. Ten days later, statements by the Chancellor are known. The outrage in the final of the election campaign is great.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) referred to the Berlin cultural senator Joe Chialo at a private birthday party as the “court fool” of the Union and thus attracted sharp criticism. After the publication of a corresponding “Focus” report, Scholz admitted that he had related the term for the CDU politician with roots in Tanzania. From the CDU side he was accused of racism against the Black Culture Senator, which Scholz and the SPD strictly rejected.
Scholz considers racism allegation “artificially constructed”
The term related to it was “not racist in language and was never intended by me”, Scholz was quoted in a message from the SPD party executive board. A spokeswoman confirmed that Scholz referred to the term “court jarror” with the explanation. “The accusation of racism is absurd and artificially constructed,” said Scholz.
In the “Spiegel”-“top conversation” Scholz said that he “fell out of all clouds” when he saw the reporting. “You can accuse me of everything, but certainly not that I am a racist.” He has never brought the “Court Narribus” mandatory in connection with chialos skin tone. The allegation makes him “very personally affected”. He appreciates Chialo and regretted it when he had the statement. “Only I said what was reported, just not.”
As the German press agency learned from government circles, Scholz was still on the phone with Chialo in the evening. Nothing became known about the content of the conversation.
Initially, the “Focus”, whose editor -in -chief was also a guest at the party, had reported on the statements. The incident occurred at a birthday party of the entrepreneur and former FDP federal treasury Harald Christ in Berlin.
The Chancellor commissioned the media lawyer Christian Schertz to take legal action against the magazine, whose wording had given the impression of a racist insult.
Chialo did not want to comment on this on request. A spokesman for the Senate Department for Culture confirmed that there was an “incident” at an event in which Scholz and Chialo had participated. “The senator does not comment on this.”
Merz criticizes the handling and social behavior of Scholz
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz said on the sidelines of an election campaign event in the city of Neubrandenburg that it “really made him speechless” when he found out about the incident. “This is the Federal Chancellor who always claims respect, but obviously only for himself.” Scholz had to decide for himself whether he apologizes. The incident “also throws a light on its handling and behavior, also on his social behavior.”
Union faction vice Jens Spahn became more striking: “This is an unspeakable derailment by the Chancellor, which is tasteless and thus the opposite of respect. As a friend of Joe, Joe shake me these insults,” said the CDU politician of the German Press Agency. “Olaf Scholz should apologize to him personally. It is the sad end of a catastrophic chancellery.” Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) wrote on the platform X: “It would be decent if the Chancellor would now apologize to Joe Chialo.”
Scholz calls Chialo an “important liberal voice in the Union”
Scholz explained that at the celebration ten days ago he criticized the common voting behavior of CDU/CSU and AfD in the Bundestag. When it comes to the indication that there were also liberal voices in the CDU, he replied that very few party representatives against the behavior of party leader Merz would have spoken out and critically spoke. “Personally, I appreciate Joe Chialo as an important liberal voice in the Union,” said Scholz.
SPD general secretary Matthias Miersch accused the “Focus” a “targeted campaign work in the sense of the CDU”. The CDU’s criticism said in a message: “The CDU stages an outrage here that is kicked out ten days after the alleged incident. (…) The party, whose chairman, as” little Pashas “and” social tourists “, defamates, Should hold back with unsustainable accusations against Olaf Scholz. “
Host Christ takes Scholz under protection
Host Christ told the “Tagesspiegel” and the dpa that around 300 guests from politics, business, culture and journalism were invited. It should be spoken openly and not publicly reported on personal conversations. He was not there in the dialogue between Scholz and Chialo. “But I know Olaf Scholz for a long time and good enough to say: It is absurd to put the Chancellor into the corner of a racist.”
The entrepreneur Christ had once been a SPD member, but went out of the party in 2019 and switched to the FDP. There he was a federal treasurer for two years. In the meantime, he has also turned back to the FDP.
