Syria’s new rulers agree with Kurds

The recent violence in Syria gave hope for new stability. The agreement with the Kurds in the northeast is an important step by the new rulers in the effort to unite the country.

The Kurdish -guided Syrian democratic forces (SDF) have agreed with the country’s new rulers on a complete integration into the state institutions. According to the state news agency Sana, the agreement was signed by temporary president Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF Ober commander Maslum Abdi. Three months after the change of power in Syria, the agreement with the SDF military alliance led by Kurds in the northeast represents an important step in the effort of the Islamist transitional government to unite the country.

With the agreement, the Kurds give up their previous role as an independent military and administrative power in Syria. The agreement includes central points such as the political participation of all Syrians regardless of ethnic or religious belonging and the recognition of the Kurdish community as a population group with full citizenship rights.

The Islamist transitional government is intended to control over civilian and military facilities in the northeast of the country, including border crossings to Iraq and Turkey, airports as well as oil and gas fields. In addition, a safe return of all displaced people was agreed.

Military operation officially ended in Syria’s west

“This is a great success for the transitional government, especially after the terrible events of the past few days,” said Charles Lister from the Middle East Institute in Washington to the “Wall Street Journal”. Previously, after a wave of violence in the coastal areas in the west, the transitional government had brought the situation back under control there. The Ministry of Defense said that the “military operation” against supporters of the fallen long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad had ended.

According to the latest information from the Syrian observation center for human rights, bloodshed cost more than 1,500 people their lives, most of them were civilians. According to the activists, the religious minority of Alawites, which also belongs to Assad, had a target. The observation center based in Great Britain reported “massacres”. The transitional government saw an attempt by the Assad Loyalists behind the violent outbreak of violence to plunge the country into a new civil war.

The fact that the new rulers achieved an agreement with the SDF military alliance in the northeast cited by Kurds at this point could be a turning point for developments in the Arab country. “For the international community, a potential solution to the conflict between the SDF and Damascus means enormous progress for the transition in Syria,” said Middle East expert Lister to “Wall Street Journal”.

So far, the northeastern Syria has mainly been controlled by the SDF troops who fought against the Islamic State terrorist militia during the long-term civil war. There the SDF has built up its own self -government. Turkey sees it as a branch of the forbidden Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), classifies it as a terrorist organization and fights it.

The Kurdish leadership had negotiated their future with the new rulers in Damascus in the past few weeks. The agreed agreement – provided that it is implemented as agreed – will remove one of the most important challenges for the new government. Both sides emphasized the country’s unity and according to their own statements rejected a division of Syria.

Israel again attacks goals in Syria

Meanwhile, Israel’s Air Force once again attacked destinations in southern Syria at night. Fighter planes attacked radar systems, command centers and arms camps at night, the Israeli army said. These had presented a threat to the state of Israel and its armed forces and were attacked to remove “future threats”.

After the fall of al-Assad in December, Israel had largely destroyed the military facilities and arsenals of its government troops with hundreds of attacks. Since then, the Israeli army has expanded its activities in the neighboring country. Syria’s transitional government calls for Israel’s withdrawal.
