For half a decade after the Brexit, the relationship between London and Brussels thaws. A deal should pave the way. Germany has to accept a setback.
Five years after the Brexit, Great Britain and the EU are approaching again. Representatives of the 27 EU countries approved plans for closer cooperation in topics such as defense and security, food standards, fishing and energy, as the dpa news agency learned from diplomats and EU officials at the beginning of a summit in London.
The summit in London, in which EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President António Costa want to seal the deal with the Great Britain Premier Keir Stronger, is the first since Brexit in 2020 and is considered an important milestone in the relationship between the two sides.
Years after Brexit: Europe moves together
Great Britain had left the EU in early 2020 and has not been a member of the EU Customs and Indoor Market since 2021. In a referendum, a very narrow majority of the British had spoken out for leaving and ended 47 years of EU membership.
Against the background of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the EU and Great Britain now want to cooperate significantly more closely on security issues. It should also be easier to act in the future. Both sides also want to give each other access to fishing reasons in the coming years – a point that is a political issue in Great Britain.
Breaks for Berlin
For the time being there is no concrete agreement for a proposal by the EU Commission for a so-called Youth Mobility Scheme. The topic is not from the table. The two sides agreed to continue working on it. Berlin in particular had insisted on the fact that young people from the EU can live and work easier for limited time in the United Kingdom.
From a London perspective, however, the topic is delicate because water on the mills of the Brexit pioneer and right-wing populist Nigel Farage could be, whose party reform UK is currently lying ahead of the People’s Parties Labor and the Conservatives.

The McDonagh sisters in Cork
The traveling people, the travelers, fascinate the photographer Sam Wright. The McDonagh family is a prominent Irish Traveler family from Cork, which repeatedly encountered the photographer on horse-scale markets. “I admire the glamorous style of these young women, their self -confidence,” he says. Members of the Irish Traveler community report widespread discrimination. In Great Britain, typical Irish names such as that of the McDonaghs on the black lists of some tour operators, hotels or restaurants are

Great Britain has access to EU defense billions
For the UK, it is central to the fact that British companies can support the EU’s procurement projects for armaments. Among other things, it is about a financial instrument called Safe, which is to be made available for a total of 150 billion euros – for example for air defense systems and artillery.
Although the project at EU level is not yet completely in dry cloths, the negotiations on this are almost complete, according to diplomatic circles. With the security partnership, the basis for Great Britain is now being created that British companies can be involved.
In addition, the two sides want to work closely together when protecting critical infrastructure. Recently, there was always damage to Untersekabeln. In addition, more cooperation is planned with a view to security in space and more data about irregular migration should be exchanged in the future.
