After the months of blockade of relief goods by Israel, there is acute despair among Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. In the event of a rush for a UN camp, there is a fatal crowd.
The humanitarian emergency in the contested Gaza strip continues to come to a head. According to the UN organization, at least two people were killed in a tumultuous storm on a large warehouse of the World Food Program (WFP) in the center of the sealed coastal area, and many more were injured. “Hordes of hungry people” entered the warehouse in order to get “foods provided” for distribution, “said a message to X.
Eyewitnesses reported that there were great crowds, especially at the main gate of the warehouse. There were also reports that some people had torn parts of the metal walls to get access to the warehouse. Videos on social media show how numerous people storm and loot the warehouse with loud shouts. From medical circles in the Al-Aksa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah it was said that two people were crushed, two more were killed by shots.
Controversial foundation rejects reports
In view of the months of blockade of auxiliary goods by Israel, which had only been loosened up a bit, many people in the coastal strip are in a desperate location – there is a lack of food, drinking water, medication and many other things of everyday needs. In the past few days there have been reports of looting and a storm on a new distribution center, which is operated by the controversial Gaza Humanitrian Foundation (GHF).
However, the foundation rejected reports of dead, mass injuries and chaos to the distribution centers in Gaza it set up. There have been no location for the GHF. “Reports that say other things come from Hamas and are wrong,” it said.
Israel’s leadership has the Palestinian terrorist organization fight militarily and accuses it of having branched and sold earlier aid deliveries for their own purposes to pay weapons and fighters with the money. This is also cited as the reason for the new distribution strategy. UN representatives say that Israel has not submitted any evidence of the allegations.
So far, 14,550 food packages have been distributed at the two distribution centers opened so far, the GHF said. The operations should continue today and extended to four planned locations. “The construction of other distribution centers in Gaza is planned in the coming weeks,” it said.
UN and Israel blame each other
According to the will of the Israeli government, the foundation should in future be responsible for the distribution of relief goods. Aid organizations of the UN and other international initiatives are to be avoided.
The UN-NOTILFBUTHER accidents sharp criticism and spoke of a “militarized distribution system” that endangers people and does not do justice to their needs. “The Israeli authorities have undermined the ability of our teams to provide real humanitarian aid based on principles.” You do not participate in projects “that undermine our neutrality, impartiality or independence”. Help should “not be used as a weapon”.
Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon, in turn, accused the UN “extortion and threats” against humanitarian organizations who worked with the GHF. “This is mafia -like behavior and a blatant violation of the basic principles of the UN,” said Danon on X.
Location in Gaza “more dark than ever”
Since the beginning of the Gaza War in October 2023, the emergency of the approximately two million people in the densely populated coastal area has drastically intensified. After 600 days, the humanitarian situation is “so dark as ever”, stated the UN-NOTILFBERO.
“The civilians in Gaza have lost hope,” said the UN coordinator for humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, Sigrid Kaag, the UN Security Council in New York. The Palestinians in Gaza now “see you” instead of “goodbye”. Death is a constant companion for the civilians, not hope. The US surgeon Feroze Sidhwa cited knowledge of the organization “War Child Alliance” before the mighty UN committee, according to which every second child in Gaza is at risk.
The war was triggered by the terrorist attack by Hamas and other Islamist groups on October 7, 2023 to the south of Israel. The attackers killed around 1,200 people and dragged more than 250 more than hostages in the Gaza Strip.
According to the health authority controlled by the Hamas, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war. The number of people, which is barely checked, summarizes fighters and civilians. “The smell of death has not left us for 600 days,” a Palestinian resident in Deir al-Balah told the US broadcaster CNN.
Demonstrations in Israel
In the evening in the Israeli coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv, thousands of people demonstrated again for an end to the war and the immediate release of the hostages, which are still in the violence of Hamas. On Wednesday, the relatives reminded that their loved ones have been hostage for 600 days. According to Israeli information, there are currently at least 20 living hostages in the Gaza Strip, where Hamas – to protect against Israel’s military – has created a wide -branched tunnel system.
“In the tunnels you cannot know whether a terrorist is getting up one morning and simply shoots you or whether the tunnel in which you are sleeping is blown through a bomb,” said Iair Horn, who was released in February and whose brother Eisan is still held as hostage in Gaza.
Before the rally, there was chaotic disputes between demonstrators and the police on the hostage of the hosts in the center of Tel Aviv. According to a report by the “Times of Israel”, 62 people who occupied the party building and blocked the streets before the headquarters of the Israeli head of government Benjamin Netanyahu were arrested. Two police officers were injured in the clashes.
