Sebastian Vettel criticizes UEFA’s ban on the rainbow color campaign

The dispute over Uefa’s ban on lighting the Munich Allianz Arena in rainbow colors during the European Championship game against Hungary continues. Formula 1 racing driver Sebastian Vettel criticizes the association’s decision.

The dispute over the Uefa’s ban on illuminating the Munich Allianz Arena as a symbol of diversity and tolerance during the game against Hungary (2: 2) in rainbow colors is far from over. Sebastian Vettel is also deeply disappointed by the association’s decision. For the four-time Formula 1 world champion, the ban is incomprehensible.

Sebastian Vettel: This symbol does no harm to anyone

“I don’t know all the details,” said the Aston Martin driver at the press conference before the Styrian Grand Prix. But it is “the wrong way” to understand the rainbow colors as a “political message”. “It definitely doesn’t harm anyone and I think it’s a great message that they would have liked to send out and weren’t allowed to,” said Vettel.

The Uefa had justified the ban with reference to the political context. The action is a reaction to a new law in Hungary that restricts young people’s rights to information about homosexuality and transsexuality. According to its statutes, however, Uefa is a “politically and religiously neutral organization”.

No conclusive argument for Vettel. The fact that institutions, associations, organizations forbid such symbols as the rainbow flag at all should be reconsidered. “I did not understand it.” Vettel speaks to many from the heart.
