Ski crosser Rohrweck won at the World Cup opener in Val Thorens

World Cup debutant Mathias Graf finished fourth in the small final in eighth place. In the women’s race, Andrea Limbacher was seventh, Sonja Gigler did not compete in the small final after a fall in the semifinals and was eighth.

Rohrweck fended off the attacks of the competition in the decision and won in front of the German Tobias Müller and the Swiss Jonas Lenherr. In the qualification on Tuesday on the 1,300 meter long course in the French ski resort, he had already been the best Austrian in fourth place. On Thursday he finished first in the round of 16 and the semi-finals, only finishing second in the quarter-finals behind Ryo Sugai from Japan.

“Honestly, I didn’t feel so good in the morning. I was nervous, didn’t know how I was feeling,” said the 32-year-old in a first reaction at the finish, he spoke of a “hard piece of work. Mostly I made sure I got off to a good start and then said goodbye. That was my plan.” It should also rise again on Friday. There is another competition on the program in Val Thorens.

Graf made it to the semi-finals on his debut in the World Cup, while Tristan Takats, who was also promoted from qualifying, was eliminated in the round of 16. This fate befell Katrin Ofner in the women’s category. Junior World Champion Gigler and the experienced Limbacher fought their way to the semi-finals, where it was the end for both of them. Gigler hit her head hard when she fell, had to be treated briefly and then stopped competing. According to ORF information, the 21-year-old complained of a headache, but was otherwise unharmed.
