“We started really well in the first third and we had really good chances to score. It’s such a shame that we didn’t get the puck in the goal,” Steel Wings coach Matej Hocevar was supposed to say after the game about his team’s initial phase. Linz started powerfully and surprised the hosts with it. But a mistake by Linz’s defense was enough for the Val Gardena lead: Michael Sölva scored in the 17th minute to make it 1-0 for the home side.
In the 30th minute, Niko Lahtinen managed to equalize 1-1 with a majority of goals. The game flow of the guests from Upper Austria was already slowed down a bit. Mainly because the people of Linz also had to act outnumbered. In the 34th minute, Hannes Kasslatter put HC Gherdeina back in the lead.
After initial difficulties in the final third, Linz came back up towards the end of the game. Another goal failed. Instead, Simon Pitschieler scored in the orphaned Linz goal in the 59th minute. “We had more than enough chances to score again. Unfortunately, we didn’t succeed,” Hocevar analyzed after the game.
In the table, the Zeller Eisbären are ten points ahead, followed by Gherdeina (8), Fassa (5), Sterzing (5) and the Steel Wings (1). Third place in the table is required to advance to the pre-playoffs. Next up for Linz is a home game on February 2nd against the Zeller Eisbären. Two days later, the people of Linz received the Sterzing Broncos.
