Sills, 25, was immediately placed on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list following the indictment, meaning he cannot play or train with the Eagles until the league has reviewed the case.
The Ohio attorney general’s office said in a statement that Sills had been indicted by a grand jury on one count of rape and one count of kidnapping.
The statement says the charges stem from an incident in December 2019, in which Sills “engaged in non-consensual sexual activity and held a victim against her will.”
Sills has been summoned to appear in court on February 16, four days after the Eagles take on the Chiefs in the Super Bowl in Arizona.
Meanwhile, the NFL said Sills had been placed on the exempt list, a de facto suspension that prevents players from being active members of the list.
“Sills may not participate in practices and games or travel with the team while on the Commissioner’s Exempt List,” the league said in a statement.
“The matter will be reviewed in accordance with the NFL’s personal conduct policy.”
It’s not certain that Sills would have made the Super Bowl team, as he has only made one appearance for the team this season against the Arizona Cardinals.
He then was inactive in the Eagles’ postseason victories over the NY Giants and San Francisco 49ers.
