In 2021, with a lot of advance praise, he switched from Formula 2 to the Haas racing team in the most important international racing series. After the accident in Saudi Arabia, team boss Günther Steiner called the racing team owner Gene Haas and had to give him the unpleasant message of a destroyed car: “It’s bad, between half a million and a million.” Steiner left no doubt as to who caused the accident: “We gave him a year to learn, and what does he do? In the second race he damn well destroys a car just because the other one is faster.”
When Mick Schumacher collided with Sebastian Vettel in Miami, his teammate Kevin Magnussen tried to say, “He’s got more to him.” to calm down the team boss. Steiner’s curt reply: “Yes, but as soon as he tries to get more out of it, he fucking crashes, you know?”
The situation didn’t get any better after the race in Monaco, where Schumacher’s car suffered serious damage again. Gene Haas and Steiner then called again, the owner of the racing team railed against Schumacher: “You need talent. You can’t develop talent.” Steiner agrees: “No, you can’t buy it and you can’t develop it.”
