Bundesliga: Union coach Fischer before the top game: “We also have quality”

Union coach Urs Fischer approaches the top game at Bayern Munich with respect. Although the statistics don’t speak for the Berliners so far, he doesn’t see his team without a chance.

Urs Fischer had to laugh briefly. When asked whether the upcoming Bundesliga top game at FC Bayern Munich was a duel at eye level, the coach of 1. FC Union Berlin could only say no.

“This is a top team in Europe with endless differences. It will be a very difficult task,” said Fischer in a media round before the game on Sunday (5:30 p.m. / DAZN).

Although both clubs are currently tied in the table, the native Swiss does not see his team with the record champions on the same level. “If you look at the possibilities or the quality of the squad, then we don’t have to compare ourselves to Bayern,” said Fischer. Nevertheless, he emphasized: “We also have a quality, especially when it comes to mentality and a disciplined appearance.”

Bayern had no play, Union didn’t

The fact that Munich could have an advantage because, unlike the Berliners, they had no play last week does not annoy Fischer, according to his own statement. “The situation is as it is,” said the coach.

His team was still in action in the Europa League on Thursday and made it through to the round of 16 with a 3-1 win against Ajax Amsterdam. “Of course, there are only two days off, but you can also take something away from such a situation, especially experience. The glass can also be half full,” said Fischer.

So far, the Berliners have not been able to win any of their seven Bundesliga games against the Munich team. But Fischer sees this as an additional motivation. “We’ve struggled a bit so far, but on Sunday we have another chance to do better,” said Fischer.

The 57-year-old explained that he and his team tried to prepare the players optimally in the short time available and to make some improvements compared to Thursday. “Sometimes we have to be braver,” said Fischer, who, apart from the injured András Schäfer, has the entire squad at his disposal.
