DFB selection: Goalkeeper Trapp hopes for number one status in the national team

National coach Hansi Flick recently indicated that Marc-André ter Stegen should be number one in the German goal during Manuel Neuer’s absence. A competitor wants to fight for the place.

National keeper Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt has not yet given up the fight for number one in the German goal.

“I always have the highest goals in my career. What kind of work ethic would I have if I was satisfied with less from the start?” said the 32-year-old in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”. Trapp explained that he always wanted the maximum, but you had to work for it and earn it.

National coach Hansi Flick recently indicated that Trapp rival Marc-André ter Stegen (30) from FC Barcelona would be number one in the national soccer team during the injury to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (36). “We have the fewest problems in Germany in this position,” said Flick: “We have three, four, five goalkeepers who are among the best in the world. That’s why I have no worries at all.” Neuer, who was still the clear number one at the World Cup in November, will be out indefinitely with a broken leg. It remains to be seen whether the Bayern keeper will be fit again at the home European Championship.

“I’m someone who can honor the performance of others and Marc-André ter Stegen is also having a very good season. The national coach has said that this year he wants to give both him and me the chance to show ourselves. From so I’m assuming I’ll get my chance, and when it’s there, I want to take it,” said Trapp. “But you don’t get into the national team’s goal by talking, only by performance. So my task is very clear: I want to show performance, recommend myself to Hansi Flick and make the decision as difficult as possible for him.”
