Uli Hoeneß calls Yann Sommer a “stroke of luck” for FC Bayern in a goalkeeper emergency. Nevertheless, he believes that Manuel Neuer will return as number 1.
For Honorary President Uli Hoeneß, there is no question that national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will return to the FC Bayern Munich goal if he fully recovers from his broken leg.
“We all hope that Manuel will be as fit as before after his serious injury over the course of the year. And then he will be in goal at Bayern Munich,” said Hoeneß (71) at an event of the “Abendzeitung” in Munich.
Hoeneß does not see a club-critical newspaper interview by the captain after the separation of the German record champions from long-time goalkeeping coach and new confidante Toni Tapalovic as an obstacle. He sees no break between the goalkeeper and the club management around Oliver Kahn, who reacted very angrily to the statements, but only wants to work through the issue internally with Neuer after the Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain this Wednesday. “He’s regretted it for a long time,” said Hoeneß.
Lower leg fracture after skiing accident
Neuer was seriously injured in a skiing accident before Christmas. The 36-year-old will be out at least until the end of the season after breaking his lower leg. Bayern had to act on the transfer market during the winter break and signed Swiss national goalkeeper Yann Sommer (34) from Borussia Mönchengladbach for around 8.5 million euros.
“Yann Sommer is a stroke of luck for FC Bayern. That our board of directors found such a great character, such a great goalkeeper, such a personality in this emergency and set off in Gladbach – kudos!” Hoeneß praised. Nevertheless, he believes that Neuer will be number one again if he finds his old level of performance again. “I appreciate Yann Sommer extremely, but you mustn’t forget that Manuel is Manuel,” said Hoeneß.
