National team: “Sportschau”: 1000th international match against Ukraine in Bremen

The national team’s anniversary game could become a football festival with great symbolic power. Ukraine is said to be the opponent in Bremen in June in their 1000th international match.

The German national soccer team is scheduled to play the 1000th game in their international history in Bremen against Ukraine. This is reported by the ARD “Sports Show”.

According to the report, the Executive Committee of the German Football Association will announce this symbolic decision on Friday. The game is scheduled to take place on June 12 and will be the start of an international treble shortly after the end of the Bundesliga and European Cup season.

The game would not only have a special meaning because of the opponent Ukraine. There has not been an international match in Bremen since 2012, most recently the DFB had refrained from playing international matches on the Weser due to the Hanseatic city’s demand for the German Football League to cover police costs.

A few months after the World Cup in Qatar, which was overshadowed by political and social discussions, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine would again focus on topics outside of football – and that in the national team’s 1000th international match since 1908. Without the early end of the World Cup, the DFB-Elf played this anniversary game in the World Cup semifinals in Qatar.

According to “Sportschau”, further games in Poland and in Gelsenkirchen against Uruguay are planned for June. So far, the DFB had not publicly commented on opponents or venues. At the start of the international season, in which national coach Hansi Flick can only play test matches because of the European Championships at home in summer 2024, the four-time world champion will meet Peru in Mainz on March 25 and Belgium in Cologne on March 28. Flick will announce his squad for these games on Friday afternoon next week. The national coach has already announced that he will make personnel changes.
